Rory and Fenn have been friends for a long, long time. Orphaned at 10 years old, dropped off at Mily's door and no memories of the past. Nothing at all.8 years later, they've both moved out from Mily's and are living together as friends, working at the same diner and are saving up money to search for their parents. Rory desperately believes that finding out what happened in her past will make her life better. Remove the feeling of being an outcast.
But being an orphan isn't the only thing different about Rory. Incidents happen all around her; small fires starting seemingly without cause, she even managed to put a book case on fire once. Nobody except Fenn knows she's behind the incidents, but the Town is aware of her. They know she's different, they just can't prove anything, so they keep a small distance to her... just in case.
After an odd meeting with a stranger, everything changes and it turns out both Fenn, and especially Rory is more than meets the eye.
Now Rory has to make a choice; to accept and embrace who and what she is, or forget everything and go back to being "normal". There's a catch though; it's not only hers and Fenns life on stake - thousands of people depend on Rory making the right decision and to come back to their world.
Wow. I really liked this book. And what's not to love? Friendship turning to love, loss, pain, mystery, dragons, magic, unreadable maps, a quest, magic... I could go on.
I like Rory and Fenn. Where Rory is more likely to be a bit open-minded and curious, Fenn is more the protector type. In a sweet way. Fenn has protected Rory since they were kids, and he's got no intentions of stopping now.
Rory is SO much stronger than she believes. When strange things happen, she doesn't curl under a blanket and cries, or hides in a closet. No. She meets the weirdness head on, confront the problem. Makes a mistake? So what, she learns from it. She's observant and a quick student. She might not believe she is much in the beginning of the book, but she's got a backbone many would envy her for.
The twist of putting Lexi into Rory's path was a wonderful addition to the story. That girl got spunk. I admire her fighting skill, her honesty and the way she treats Rory.
Zordan and one of his sons, Zane is scary on their own. Although... I think there's more to the story about Zane, than what we're told. Zordon is selfish, he even mistreat his wife and kids the most cruel way and demands complete obedience. I've got a feeling something's off with Zane, with the way he act and respond to his father.
This book kept me late up for two nights in a row, I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to get my hands on Embracing the Flames. I want to know what happens next, will they succeed in their quest and what obstacles will Rory have to get through before taking her true place in life.

This rather long prophecy really did a number on Aurora.. 8 years ago when she was only 10 she just kind of showed up with no memory of her past.. She was taken in my a woman and her foster son Fenn.. Not knowing who she was but always feeling different Rory tried to blend in.. So when some creepy stalker guy shows up and recites those words something felt right.. Fenn her one time foster brother.. and current roomie and love interest.. Doesnt trust this guy.. However things keep happening things that cant be explained any other way..
Born in flames is a total trip and really really unique to me.. I constantly found myself hanging on ever word to understand the prophecy.. The suspense killed.. The relationship between Rory and Fenn.. was frustratingly annoying and -sigh- so sweet.. I kept cheering those to love birds on and sometimes I was disappointed sometimes not..
Theres definitely an array of characters which add even more magic to the story.. As a debut novel Knoebel you hit it out the realm! Ya see what I did there? Yerp im a regular comedic GENUIS!
Born in Flames was amazing!! Born in Flames is the first book in Candace Knoebel’s series about a young lady named Aurora Megalos. She was an orphan and couldn’t remember a thing from her past. She lived with her foster mom, Milly and her new best friend, Fenn. Fenn is also an orphan and doesn’t remember his past. Aurora has a series of events happen in her life after living at Milly’s that cannot be explained. When she gets very angry, she sets fire to things, by only a thought. Aurora finds that the only person she can depend on is Fenn. They live together, work together and confide in each other. Their life changes very fast and they are set on a path to figure out what must be done in order to save the Draconta race. I loved Born in Flames! Candace is a very talented author who takes you into the world of dragons, mages and other magical beings. It was a rollercoaster ride that will have you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more! Once I picked this book up, I had a difficult time putting it down! I loved Aurora’s character and her connection to Fenn. Aurora is a strong young lady but is struggling to figure out what happened in her past and why her parents left her. She is determined to find out why they did and where they are. She gets her wish and when she starts learning the answers, she is unsure whether to laugh or cry. Candace’s writing is great! As I read her book, I pictured all of the events playing out in my mind and was drawn right into Aurora’s world. I am so excited to find out what happens next! I cannot wait to read book two! Thank you Candace for an amazing adventure.
